What is CEFR?

Common European Framework of Reference.

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the international standard for measuring language ability. While it originated in Europe, it is now recognized worldwide by universities, employers, and governments as the most reliable way to describe your skill level in a foreign language.

Think of it as a roadmap for your learning journey. It clearly defines what you can do with a language at different stages, ensuring that a B2 level in German from our academy in Ghaziabad means the same thing as a B2 level in Berlin.

The Six Levels of Fluency

The framework is divided into three broad categories, with two levels each:

A
Basic User

  • A1 (Beginner):
    You can understand and use basic everyday expressions.
  • A2 (Elementary):
    You can communicate in simple, routine tasks and describe your background in simple terms.

B
Independent User

  • B1 (Intermediate):
    You can handle most situations while traveling and can produce simple, connected text on familiar topics.
  • B2 (Upper-Intermediate):
    You can interact with a degree of fluency with native speakers and understand the main ideas of complex text.

C
Proficient User

  • C1 (Advanced):
    You can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.
  • C2 (Mastery):
    You have a command of the language close to that of a native speaker, understanding almost everything with ease.
